Superhero Exhibit by Mark Sibilla

Every superhero has its origin story. Little did a 10-year-old Mark Sibilla realize that a chance encounter with a miniature notebook would lead to the creation of an entire universe that would test his artistic knowledge, stretch his imagination, and touch countless lives.

Rooted in humble beginnings, Mark began his art career drawing dinosaurs at the dining room table alongside his father and mentor, Dr. Bill Sibilla. Honing his observational skills and slowly improving his craft, Mark continued doodling throughout his childhood.

In fourth grade, Mark was gifted with a miniature notebook that would change the course of his life forever. Alongside his childhood friend, Travis Clark, Mark spent the next several years filling the notebook with all sorts of ridiculous and wonderful heroes, villains, and sentient toilets. (Often when they should have been doing homework or listening to lectures instead.) In all, they created more than 150 original  characters.

Once the notebook was filled, it was safely placed in a desk drawer for what Mark assumed would be perpetuity. In the meantime, he continued his artistic journey through high school and college earning high marks and accolades in all his endeavors.

While cleaning his room during the Covid-19 quarantine of 2020, a fateful encounter with the old notebook sparked an idea that would change the course of Mark’s life forever.

He decided to update and reinvigorate his characters from childhood using the techniques he learned through a lifetime of art education. Since beginning this project, Mark has updated more than 100 different characters from his journal –with many more on the way!

When not utilizing his artistic powers for good, Mark spends his days assisting Special Education students at Salina South Middle School. He also enjoys teaching swimming lessons, teaching and practicing taekwondo, exercising, playing his bass clarinet and guitar, immersing himself in all aspects of nerd culture, and hanging out with his cat, Kramer.
