Film: Mary Cassatt: Painting the Modern Woman Mary Cassatt made a career painting the lives of the women around her. Her radical images showed them as intellectual, feminine and real, which was a major shift in the way women appeared in art. Presenting her astonishing prints, pastels and paintings, this film introduces us to the often-overlooked Impressionist whose own career was as full of contradiction as the women she painted.
After the film, join us for the discussion: “Following Mary Cassatt: Women Artists on the Cutting Edge.” Cori North, Curator at Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery will discuss and trace the genealogy of modernist women artists who pushed the envelope after Mary Cassatt impressionist career. Women artists presented will include Gabriele Münter, partner of Wassily Kandinsky; Käthe Kollwitz, German expressionist known for wartime prints; Lee Krasner, spouse of Jackson Pollock; Helen Frankenthaler, early leader in abstract-expressionism; and finish with the feminist work of Dr. Rachel Epp Buller of Bethel College, Newton, Kansas.
